Impressions from my first TEDx event: TEDxZurich is all about inspiring speakers share their visions. The conference theme #stopstart invites all of us participating to reflect on what we recently stopped doing in life and what we are about to do new. As I just recently moved from Vienna to Zurich and joined Amazee Labs, this is definitely a topic that I can relate to!

\nAt Drupal Dev Days Szeged fago, klausi, xano & me sat together to plan necessary steps for porting Rules to Drupal 8. The architectural decisions have been laid out by fago and we defined a Rules 8.x roadmap that splits up this major effort into 3 milestones.\nAlltogether the effort is calculated to take 1048 hours of development time to fix outstanding tasks for Drupal 8, port all the subsystems of the Rules core engine, the Rules APIs and the User Interface as well as the scheduling functionality.\nSo far, 1/3 of our first milestone has been funded thanks to our great sponsors and individual supporters on Drupalfund.
\nRules 8.x is being developed on GitHub and of course everything is pushed to the drupal.org Rules repository as well. Leveraging the GitHub pull request workflow allows us to collaborate more efficiently on coding and we are glad to get more people contributing.
\nd8rules training sprint at DrupalCamp Portoroz\nOur first training / code sprint at DrupalCamp Alpe-Adria in Portoroz was really successful with some contributors getting their first pull requests merged.

\nThe current Context system in Drupal 8 core doesn't match the requirements of the Rules module. As discussed at Drupal Dev Days Szeged it would be great to fix it in core. fago, timplunket who works on Page manager for Drupal 8 and others involved will meet at DrupalCon Austin to discuss how to share efforts on what fago has already started to implement a context system for Rules 8.x. \nBefore Drupal Dev Days Szeged, fago & me decided to collect funds for porting Rules to Drupal 8 because of the following reasons:
\nAs much as we love working on client projects, developing modules and giving back to the community on a large scale as with the Rules module is definitely something that we are passionate about
\nTo be honest, we really underestimated the effort required to run this whole campaign. I stopped counting hours at some point, but I can assure that there were several hundreds of hours invested mostly from our free time to assure that everything is set up properly. So here's a wrap-up of how we did it, and be assured we have learned some lessons on the way :)\nSetting up a project plan & defining our mission of course was critical in the beginning. That's probably something that you already do for your regular projects, so nothing really special in here. The only difference is that you don't know where your budget will come from.
\nTotal goal: € 47,160 (~ $ 65,000)\nFor a regular Drupal project that is probably a medium-sized budget, but for collecting funds that goal felt pretty ambitious. Before the #d8rules initiative, the projects funded via Drupalfund were $ 2400 maximum. \nThis is why we decided to go for both corporate and crowd funding:
\n[Sponsor packages][11] for corporates vary between $ 650 - $ 11000 and [Drupalfund perks][2] were classified from $ 10 to $ 270.\nWe didn't want to loose much money on benefits so we tried to keep them focused at marketing (logos in different sizes on the website and other forms of saying thank you).\nFor the Drupalfund, we were able to add a physical incentive which seems to have motivated quite some people to donate:
\nThe #d8rules Ruler was sold out a few days before ending the campaign and [rumors are that Laserbox has created a second limited yellow edition][12] for [those who pledge last minute on the Drupalfund][2] :)\nIn general, we tried to find sponsor package / perk names that encourage people to identify with supporting the project and which are directly related to the Rules module such as \"Event dispatcher\", \"Batch processor\" or \"Data selection guru\".
\nFees include Drupalfund platform (7,5 %), Paypal (3,5 %), Currency conversion USD to EUR (2 %) and VAT (20 %). This was a bit scary at the beginning, so we offer invoices for all donations $ 35+ in order to remove the VAT burden. Based on those fees, we put together estimations of how many perks we have to sell in order to achieve the goal: The plan was $ 10 x 70, $ 20 x 60, $ 30 x 60, $ 65 x 50, $ 90 x 50, $ 150 x 15, $ 270 x 5 which is a total of 310 people who pledge.\nLet's have a look at what we got: 137+ people pledged as of June 11, 3pm CEST and the distribution is a bit different than expected:
\nActually more people pledged larger amounts of money and within the $ 649+ range there are some pretty large donations which helped the fund succeed at the very end.
\nWe evaluated [Kickstarter][13], [Indiegogo][14] & [Drupalfund][15] as three possible options to do the crowd funding. Kickstarter was too complicated to set up, because you need a legal entity in the US / UK. Indiegogo was tempting because it is quite established, has lower fees, offers a smoother user experience, you can do EUR or USD funding and choose between fixed or flexible funding models. On the other hand, we really liked the idea of Drupalfund becoming a role model for the Drupal community and felt like going with another platform would be counter-productive from a community standpoint.\nThanks to the great support from the Drupalfund team, setting up the campaign website was pretty easy. We could get some small usability enhancements in (you can now click on perks to donate) and they were very supportive throughout the whole campaign by promoting us on their blog for example.\nSo I think we picked the right trade-off in terms of choosing a funding platform and have shown that you may also run larger campaigns on Drupalfund. Still keep in mind that without those $649+ donations our campaign would probably have failed due to a lack of momentum around DrupalCon.
\nHaving the right momentum at the right time, I guess, is the hardest with setting up any campaign. Especially if you are asking for money, you'll need to bring people to your side. Luckily, we had lots of supporters from the community already: the Rules module has more than 200,000 reported installations and fago is well known all around Drupal.\nI used the [buffer app][16] to constantly schedule tweets for the d8rules twitter account. Of course using an easy and positive hashtag such as #d8rules helped a lot. \nI also think that the Rules logo redesign by [Nico Grienauer][17] substancially supported the campaign.

\nThanks to the great support from 11 Drupal community members at Drupal Dev Days, we were able to get some user voices captured which we then included in our campaign video. [Dominik Kiss][18] spontaneously offered to shoot and edit the video and I'm really thankful for the great work he did on a volunteer basis within the short time constraints of one week before launching the campaign on Drupalfund!
\nOur colleague [Max Mikus][19] spontaneously offered to created some handcrafted indicators that visualize the funding process of #d8rules: The Drupalfund sucessfully filled up 50% of Milestone 1 but we still need more Sponsors to get there:
\nAnd then, Milestones 2 and 3 obviously would also be great to get funded.
\nBut for now, we'd like to say thank you to everyone who believed in our project and pledged on the Drupalfund. It's awesome to see how many have supported us on the way either by donating, spreading the word and even offering volunteer help. Also note that there are already [10 contributors][20] to the Rules 8.x repository on GitHub.
\nWe will keep working, developing Rules 8.x based on the funds and limited free time that we have. I guess we have pushed the boundaries for crowd funding in Drupal a bit further, but there are also several questions to be discussed and resolved along the way:

\nWolfgang Ziegler (fago), our community friends Klaus Purer (klausi), Thomas Seidl (drunkenmonkey) and me passed by beautiful Budapest for some Parlament sightseeing and reached Szeged on Sunday evening, ready to spend the upcoming week sprinting on Drupal 8 and related projects. The conference hotel is located just next to the venue in walking distance to the city center with plenty of good & traditional restaurant options. The abording Tiza river provides a scenic setting and invites for a quick break when the mind needs to clear up a little during sprinting. Check out my flickr set for some visual impressions.
\nAfter the good feedback on DrupalCamp Vienna that we had received as Drupal Austria members, we already felt quite proud of what we had achieved last November. Now, having attended last weeks conference, I feel like the Drupal Dev Days team just set the bar even higher. This is what dev days should be like: an entire week of sprinting & sessions where the community could get a lot of work done.
\nDev Days are a unique chance of bringing together hundreds of people passionate about Drupal core to discuss hard problems and get work done in a very productive environment. The dev days team has shared these impressive stats:
\n\n\n115 core commits,\n706 changed files,\n11k+,7k- lines\n7 change records\n19 beta blocker/targets fixed\n7 \"hard problems\" discussions\nOf course, moving on with the Drupal 8 Entity system was fago's first priority. Fortunately, the smart folks working on the Entity Field API and the Multi-Lingual iniative have been able to use the opportunity to make great progress on having the Entity system automatically generating the schema for content entities, which besides being super-useful will enable all content entities to be translatable.\nI joined the Lewis Nyman and the Drupal 8 front-end united sprinters to help with making Drupal.org finally responsive. Great progress has been made and I'm really looking forward to see this deployed. Tons of stuff has been worked on by many sprinters. One initiative that I'm really glad to see is the joined effort to make Search API for Drupal 8 the definitive solution for advanced contrib search solutions. Yay, for not having to choose between Apache Solr Search module and the generic Search API any more. The team around drunkenmonkey with nick_vh, mollux and others seems to have reached a lot. It looks like we can expect a flexible-as-usual Search API for Drupal 8 with quite some usability improvements. Easily setting up a site-wide search seems to be a high priority, which also means that we need an approach for including several entity types within a search. Note that per Switch from Field-based storage to Entity-based storage, fields in Drupal 8 can't be shared any more. Still, we think that there should be a way of indexing similar properties across entity types like a \"date changed\" field in a uniform way so that the search can be filtered and sorted on those. Personally, I'd envision some kind of meta-entity that allows to create fields that are based on similar fields of the underlying entity types and bundles. Similar to the abstraction that media module provides. This would allow us to use arbitrary search results in Views in a structured way. Here is the related Search API issue.
\nfago's session Drupal 8 Entity API has been substantially overhauled since last time in Vienna. Seems like the Entity system has made quite some progress during the last 4 months.
\nDrupal 8 Entity API Slides\nMy Blocks & Layouts from D7 to D8 presentation covered all display approaches from Contextual blocks over EVA to the big three: Context, Display Suite and Panels to provide a perspective on what has been planned for Drupal 8 as part of the WSCCI & SCOTCH initiatives.
\nPanels lovers like Schnitzel and me are curious about where the Drupal 8 cycle will lead us in terms of fundamental Panels features like adding context based on CTools Context. I recognize that a lot of ground work has been made by converting Blocks to the Plugin system. An exensible Layout module couldn't get finished on time for core and there is a notion of a Context API but it isn't used anywhere, yet. On the other hand Display Suite has already been ported to D8. I understand that the Display Suite maintainers want to keep their focus on the entity view mode level while the Panels people are more into the generic layout approach that can also be applied to the page level using Panels everywhere for example. Let's see where this goes, also worth a mention is the Display Suite Inception module. \nAmong the manyfold inspiring sessions, here are two presentations that I especially enjoyed: Community Building with Mentoring: What makes people crazy happy to work on an open source project? (slides) by YesCT and Building really fast websites with Drupal 8 (slides) by Wim Leers.
\nBeing someone that follows Drupal core development mainly from the side lines but who tries to keep a good overview of what's happening, Drupal Dev Days were really inspiring. As Florian Loretan mentioned in his talk Drupal 8 for real, it's not only about when Drupal 8 is going to be released but we should be closely watching the what Drupal 8 is going to be about. I think that the new and shiny architectural advantages that the Symfony integration provides us with, should also allow us to better decouple systems and make them reusable. For example for the upcoming Drupal 8 port of the Rules module, we envision to have Data selectors and the Conditions UI to be components that can be leveraged by other systems independly. Imagine a data selectors being used by a CTools-like Context UI, Metatag module or for setting default field values and visibility condition for blocks to be specified using the Rules Conditions UI.

\nRight when we started organizing DrupalCamp Vienna, we tried to provide it with a meaningful theme. So what we came up with was \"Connecting Open Minds\": with the many great changes that Drupal 8 will bring, we realize, that we need to [GET OFF THE ISLAND][10] and start talking to other communities within and outside of the PHP worlds.\nFortunately, Jeffrey Jam McGuire accepted our invitation to speak and kicked-off the conference with his talk [CONNECTING OPEN MINDS][11].\nDay two, John O'Nolan, the founder of the Ghost project brought-in his very different perspective on [FOCUS: THE VALUE OF CHOOSING JUST ONE THING AT THE BAZAAR][12].\nNote, that [RECORDINGS][13] of the keynotes and about half of the sessions are available online. \nIn total, DrupalCamp Vienna was almost a one-week event: starting with trainings on Thursday, we had sessions, BoFs, a coder lounge and party on Friday and Saturday. \nThe Rules module is one of the most powerful site building tools in Drupal contrib space besides Views. You may already be familiar with creating reaction rules to perform custom actions after certain events. In this blog post, I will show you different ways of how you can leverage the Rules module to process lists of data.\nThe Rules UI is designed to provide only a limited choice of options for simplicity. Still it allows you to create complex scenarios, and computer scientists may notice that its instruction set is actually turing complete. Within the actions configuration, there are no If/Then/Else constructs, but there is a module for that. The only thing that the Rules UI provides allows you to do besides defining a sequential list of actions, is the ability to loop over lists of things.
\nConfiguring a loop over a list of items is a pretty straight forward task for a site builder. At the bottom of your actions configuration area, use the \"Add loop\" link.
\nNext, you need to configure the required variables to loop perform the loop on:
\nSimple as that! You can now use the \"Add action\" and \"Add loop\" operations on the right hand side to configure what should happen for each of the list items.\n Ok, I have to admit that this wasn't rocket science so far. Let's get to the gist of this article, where do we get the list data from? Often, your parameter variables will already either represent a list of items as in the example component before. In other cases, you might access a multiple-valued property of a single-valued variable, such as the Tags field of a node. In the following, I'd like to discuss two additional methods that will allow you to actually query for listed data and process it within Rules.
\nRules ships with the \"Fetch entity by property\" action that allows for simple entity queries.
\nWe can now use the provided list of the \"Fetch entity by property\" action and pass it over to our previously created \"Loop test\" component. As we created the loop as a component, it is easily reusable within different reaction rules or other components.
\nFetching entities by property is a pretty straight-forward way for getting a list of data into Rules. Unfortunately, you only have very limited control over the data that gets returned by the query. In many cases, specifying a single property for the query won't be enough and you might also want to have control over the order in which to process the items.
\nViews Bulk Operations to the rescue! This awesome module for one part allows to configure powerful management interfaces. As the name bulk operations indicates, a checkbox gets added to each of the items within a view and one or many operations can be performed in bulk on those items. Check out the Administration Views module, that uses VBO to spice up all administration views and listing pages.\nYou may already have guessed it, there is more to that neat module! By using the \"Load a list of entity objects from a VBO View\" action, we can bring the results of a view into Rules. And this is how it works:\nTake any VBO-enabled view or configure your own. For demonstration purposes, I have setup a simple \"My Nodes view\" that lists all nodes of type article that have been published and sorts them by date. Pretty easy, just make sure that you add the \"Bulk operations: Content\" field to your view and you are all set.
\nTo make the example a little bit more powerful, I have added a contextual filter for the Tags field. Note, that by using validation, it translates taxonomy term names into a term id. That's just some Views magic, so you can filter the list of nodes to those that have a term by using the term name within a argument/contextual filter.
\nIn the Rules configuration, we can now use the \"Load a list of entity objects from a VBO View\" action. The VBO-enabled view may be selected within the \"View and Display\" area. Also, as we have configured the contextual filter, we can pass a term name as argument to the View. Replacement patterns can be used, like in most areas of the powerful Rules module.
\nIn this article, we have learned how to use Rules loops and two methods for retrieving lists of data. The entity property query action is a simple and easy way to retrieve a list of items by specifying a single criterion. In a more advanced scenario, Views Bulk Operations may be used to use arbitrary Views results as a source of list items for the Rules module. Performance and readability of digital mapping applications decreases when displaying large amounts of data. Client-side clustering uses JavaScript to group overlapping items, but server-side clustering is needed when too many items slow down processing and create network bottle necks. The main goals are: implement real-time, server-side clustering for up to 1,000,000 items within 1 second and visualize clusters on an interactive map.\nClustering is the task of grouping unlabeled data in an automated way. Algorithms from cluster analysis are researched in order to create an algorithm for server-side clustering with maps. The proposed algorithm uses Geohash for creating a hierarchical spatial index that supports the clustering process. Geohash is a latitude/longitude geocode system based on the Morton order. Coordinates are encoded as string identifiers with a hierarchical spatial structure. The use of a Geohash-based index allows to significantly reduce the time complexity of the real-time clustering process.\nThree implementations of the clustering algorithm are realized as the Geocluster module for the free and open source content management system and framework Drupal. The first algorithm implementation based on PHP, Drupal’s scripting language, doesn’t scale well. A second, MySQL-based clustering has been tested to scale up to 100,000 items within one second. Finally, clustering using Apache Solr scales beyond 1,000,000 items and satisfies the main research goal of the thesis.\nIn addition to performance considerations, visualization techniques for putting clusters on a map are researched and evaluated in an exploratory analysis. Map types as well as cluster visualization techniques are presented. The evaluation classifies the stated techniques for cluster visualization on maps and provides a foundation for evaluating the visual aspects of the Geocluster implementation.

\nAt epiqo, we started developing Recruiter early on by September 2010. As one of the very first Drupal 7 based distributions, short time after Drupal 7 was released in January 2011, our first beta of Recruiter was announced on March 4th, 2011. Creating the Recruiter distribution early on by that time involved figuring out the right feature-driven development workflow and working on fundamental Drupal contrib modules. Entity API, Profile2, Field-collection, the Search API, Rules, the Rules Autotagger module and a Term-level field is just a brief exerpt of the great variety of modules that have been sponsored during the creating of the Recruiter distribution.
\nSince our first beta release, we have been continously improving and expanding the Recruiter distribution which forms the basis of all our job boards. A lot of stabilizing happenend under the hood like figuring out the optimum of default field settings for job postings and our detailed resume feature. Over time, we also added a number of additional features to Recruiter like job applications, a content admin role, a registration feature and the ability to switch between Search API Database and Solr backends. It took a while until the drupal.org distribution infrastructure was able to build full releases, so since beta7 we are able to host them entirely on drupal.org.
\nBack in early 2011, shipping Recruiter with a red Bartik theme was kind of cool because we were showcasing the new and fresh Drupal 7. Frontend web design has evolved dramatically since then, so we decided to create a modern, new base theme for our Recruiter based sites. Together with Sebastian Siemssen we worked on his complete rewrite of the Omega 4 base theme. In summer 2012, we relaunched our demonstration platform DrupalJobs just in time for DrupalCon Munich. Since then, our Recruiter-based job portals are based on our mobile-first and reponsive base theme Cloudy that leverages Sass, Compass and the Susy grid.\nWith the final release of Recruiter, we are glad to include the fully open-sourced Cloudy base theme within the distribution. \nSo far, Recruiter was a great platform technology-wise, but after installing the distribution you didn't see anything. We have now added a Recruiter Demo feature to provide a good starting point when evaluating the Recruiter distribution. The installer will automatically import a set of demo data, including job postings and a complete applicant resumes.
